A memorial forest was established in behalf of the 12th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), organized for the first time in Turkey by the Ministry of Forest and Water Affairs. Approximately 70.000 saplings will be planted in this Memorial Forest.
A Meaningful will be Transmitted to the World in Combating Desertification
The 12th Conference of the Parties which was held between the 12th and the 23rd of October 2015, in Ankara has a crucial importance in combating desertification.
A significant message will be transmitted to the World to show a more decisive attitude in combating both land degradation and climate change with ideas that will emerge from and decisions to be taken after the Conference of the Parties, opened by the Prof. Dr. Veysel Eroğlu, Minister of Forestry and Water Affairs.
The Presidency of the COP 12 will be led by Turkey for 2 Years
On the other hand, right after the 12th Conference of the Parties, the COP 12 will be chaired by Turkey for two years.
Aiming to plant one sapling for every people in the World, which means 7 billion saplings, the Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs established a memorial forest for this momentous occasion. About 70.000 saplings were planted in this forest. 80 Cypress (Cupressus Sempervirens) and 230 Blue Cypress (Cupressus Arizonica) were planted in the forest established on about 10 decares, in the Forest of Atatürk (Atatürk Orman Çiftliği).
On the other hand in the Memorial Forest established in Elmadağ, the aim is to plant 39.500 Black Pines, 20.000 Cedars and 10.000 Wild Pears. Planting of 20.000 Black Pines was completed in the forest established in this area. Planting of the rest of the saplings is continuing.
